Excel Essentials

This one day course is for people who have never used Excel (or any other spread-sheet) before but are familiar with using Windows.

By the end of the course, delegates will be confident in using the essential features of
Excel to create and alter simple spreadsheets, using formulae.

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Lay out text, numbers and formula in a worksheet.
  • Creating & Copy formulas to quickly repeat calculations.
  • Use Autofill, Autoformat, Automatic SUM & short-cut menus to speed up work.
  • Use absolute cell references to copy formula while keeping elements constant.
  • Print out all or part of the worksheet.
  • Change column widths, the appearance of numbers and text justification.
  • Apply lines, shading and fonts to enhance the appearance of a worksheet.
  • Create different types of graphs, using Chart Wizard and place them within the worksheet.


This course is run for a maximum of six delegates.


  1. What is a Spread-Sheet: Creating a spreadsheet - Entering text & numbers; Inserting rows, Creating Formulae: using the SUM function, copying & moving text.
  2. Copying cell contents: Copying formulae, Absolute Cell References, Printing.
  3. Making It Look Good: Formatting, Auto-Format, Borders & Shading, Fonts, Headers & Footers, Print preview; Page Setup; Headers & Footers
  4. Graphs: Creating graphs with Graph Wizard, Printing Graphs, Enhancing Graphs
No knowledge of Excel or of spread-sheets is required. However participants should
be familiar with Windows and happy with using the mouse, menus and scroll bars.
