Freedom of Information Act

This half day workshop is designed to offer staff a basic awareness of  your organisation’s Freedom of Information Procedures and to explore their practical application by working through scenarios.

The Freedom of Information Act has established the principle of openness and transparency within the Public Sector. The right of access to information held by public authorities regarding how they carry out their duties, how they make decisions and spend the public’s money has to be balanced with public interest and National Security.

>>OBJECTIVES
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of the Act and how its regulations apply to them as individuals, employees, in their jobs and in their dealings with service users
  • Describe how the organisation’s Freedom of Information policy and procedure applies to them as individuals, employees, in their jobs and in their dealings with service users
  • Discuss the issues around compliance
  • Discuss the appropriate use of exemptions
  • State the penalties for breaching regulations
  • State who to contact for further information and support

This workshop should be run for groups of up to 16.

All staff who work with public authorities including local authorities, health service, dentists, schools, police.

The contents of this course will incorporate issues of equal opportunities and anti-oppressive practice to assist participants in understanding and challenging all forms of discrimination.
