Managing Poor Performance / Inappropriate Behaviour

As a result of attending this one day course participants will learn how to understand other people’s behaviour and how to react assertively when faced with difficult, aggressive or uncooperative people.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Briefly explain the basics of transactional analysis
  • Explain how their behaviour affects the behaviour of others
  • Describe the different factors which influence an individual´s motivation
  • Identify some of the underlying causes of inappropriate (difficult) behaviour
  • Set clear boundaries and expectations
  • Describe what is meant by positive and constructive feedback
  • Deal with events/situations/behaviours rather than personalities
  • Establish positive productive working relationships with those who might previously have been viewed as difficult or uncooperative


One day.

This course should be run for groups of up to 12.

Staff who are responsible for the management / supervision / support of colleagues within their teams who have experienced difficulties and would benefit from a more assertive, confident approach.

The contents of this workshop will incorporate issues of equal opportunities and anti-oppressive practice to assist participants in understanding and challenging all forms of discrimination.

  • Recognising how our behaviour affects others
  • Motivational factors
  • Adopting assertive behaviours
  • Using a positive approach
  • Communication: verbal, non-verbal
  • Dealing with aggression, cynicism, obstructive behaviours
  • Skills practice, (role plays)
  • Action plans as a result of attending the workshop
